Hi guys.
I am a Russian citizen applying for a 2 year study permit. My almost 2yo son will go with me, he is a US citizen. I am applying from Russia. Canadian consulate in Russia has a check list stating that minors under 6 should apply for TRV instead of an open study permit. But the thing is that US citizens do not need TRV. I plan on applying online, and when I answer a questionnaire and it asks for son's citizenship it again just tells me that US citizens do not need any. But as far as I know US citizens generally can stay in Canada for no longer than 6 months. Does anyone know what to do in this situation? Maybe I should apply for an open study permit instead? But I know that a minor has to be 6 or older in order to qualify for it...

I'm not sure what you mean by an open study permit.

He can come to Canada based on his passport. You will need to apply to extend his status every six months to keep his stay in Canada valid / legal.

Thank you SO MUCH for your response. But it seems so weird and wrong not to get a long term visa for him when our intent is to stay way longer than 6 months. Well, by open study permit I mean - I am applying online, the system does not let me apply for his TRV, but allows to apply for an open study permit.
It is kind of scary to extend his stay every 6 months. What if they reject it one day without any particular reason before I finish school....

When you enter, just ask CBSA to issue your son a Visitor Record to match the length of your study permit.
