US Border crossing - Expired Temp work permit

Hi Team,
Your advice please. I am an australian temporary foreign worker. My work permit has expired, but before it expired I had reapplied for an extension to the end of this year, so I believe I have "Implied status". No problems there. Given the speed of processing, it will be May or June before they make their decision.
Given that my job will end at the end of this year, I have been looking for new work, and have an interview lined up in upstate New York. The potential new employer would like me to visit in person, soonish.

Is it the case that if I leave Canada before I get my extended work permit, I will not be able to reenter Canada with my old work permit, and return to my present job? It's unclear to me if I can come back and continue as is now, or that the CBSA will perhaps allow me to come back home, but only as a visitor. Obviously, I need to keep working until year's end! I don't know if it's relevant but I would only need a day, maybe two in the US of A.

To complicate the situation, I have a UK passport as well. I presume reentering Canada on that as a visitor upon return from the USA would be a large no-no? My work permit is in my Aussie documentation.

Thanks in advance for your sage advice.

-Rich

If a temporary resident applies for renewal of their work or study permit and their permit expires
before a decision is made, R186(u) and R189 (the right to continue working or studying under the
same conditions pending a determination of their application for renewal) apply only as long as
the person remains in Canada.
