I am currently on a 3 years OWP and working full time for a firm in Ontario. Just found out that I am pregnant. I guess according to OHIP policy I will be eligible to apply for OHIP at the end of Nov ( worked six months) this year.

Anything I can do to fastrack this ?
If I apply in Nov, do I still need to do that 3 months waiting period?
should I get married and start applying for PR with my fiancée? then get OHIP?
is there medical insurance out there to cover the period before applying OHIP?

Thank you guys for your help!!!

You should contact OHIP and see if you are eligible. I believe that the waiting period applies from the time you arrived in Ontario. As far as private insurance, the only type available in Canada is coverage for emergencies and complications in pregnancy up to 9 weeks before the baby is due to be born. If you need more information about this, feel free to email us at arbetov.office@gmail.com

I just applied for ohip on friday. The 3 months waiting period starts from the day you land. I am also pregnant and due end of august and my card wont be active till October 18th. I asked of there was any way to expedite it and the answer was nope sorry can't do nothing and you gotta wait.

It's kind of expensive if you are not covered by OHIP. You have to go through several blood tests, ultrasound and doctor visits during pregnancy. Some tests need to be performed during specific weeks. Hence, I think you should not risk your baby life and just pay it by yourself for the first few months.

Several people told me that a deliver without OHIP can cost you $10k+ if this is a normal delivery. If you go through surgery, it could cost you up to $40k.

Be prepared and all the best for you and your baby!

I don't know why people say it costs 10-20K, I just gave birth in Ontario uninsured and everything (physician fees, hospital fees, epidural, forceps delivery) cost $4400 in total.

yeah, that's what i thought too... i've read it's usually around $5000 for 1 night's stay. i'm sure the price increases if there are complications.

The hospital fee is $2000/night, the cost for complications would be reflected on the physician fee portion, for example the use of forceps in my son's delivery cost $554, each procedure has it's own billing code. One thing that is absolutely crazy is that they charge you a 50% extra premium on top of everything if the baby is born between 6PM-12AM, and 75% if the birth occurs after midnight and before 8AM. $700 of my bill was just a charge for the fact that he was born at 10PM. :o

that IS crazy! congrats though! did you receive pre-natal care in Canada too?

Yes, through a midwife, which is free of charge even for non-OHIP patients in Ontario. They were amazing.
The only out of pocket things were ultrasounds and blood work. Ultrasounds were around $170 each, blood work only around $10/test. Word of advice for anyone in a similar situation, if you go to an actual hospital for an ultrasound they charge more than double what outside clinics charge.

$5000 is for a night and for the most simple case. However, some pregnant women have a much more complicated case. It is normal that people are required to stay in the hospital for 3 days.

As per my obstetrician, the standard post-partum stay in Ontario for vaginal delivery is one night, two nights for Ceserean

My delivery was pretty complicated, epidural and also forceps, those two procedures alone cost $1100. If I hadn't gotten them it would have been around $3500 for everything.

A c-section would have cost another $500 for the physician fee.
