My mom came here last May 2012 with a regular visitor visa for 6 months. 30 days before expiry, I applied for super visa (Sep 2012). We were required to submit a proof of insurance coverage for 1 year for $100k and she had to undergo a medical exam here. It was valid until jan 16, 2014.
Now when I called CIC today, I was asked if I extended her stay....and I was told that he thinks my mom has lost her status since I didn't do that "extension.

Please help... do I really had to apply for extension aside from the super visa? why would they asked me for 1 yr insurance coverage??

No - a super visa isn't an extension. It's a brand new / separate visa.

If your mother was approved for a super visa, she would have had to exit Canada and then re-enter Canada to activate it. Did your mother leave Canada after being approved for the super visa and then re-enter Canada to activate it?

If not, then your mother is currently out of status.

FYI for all confused like me....SUPER VISA IS A VALID EXTENSION OF A VISITOR STATUS. No need to exit.

I had to see the actual document as my mom couldn't read much. It actually says"Temporary Residence Status maintained. To exit Canada on Jan 16, 2014"

Thanks for your reply.

In that document - if I may ask - is this the counter-foil (in the passport) or is this a separate document in official paper (similar to a work permit or visitor record) that was sent from CIC.

What is the heading on the top of the document?

It's not on the passport. It's a piece of paper similar to a visa. I can't remember the heading but it quotes my mom's file number/tourist number

by the way... it also mentioned "not valid for re-entry" so really no need to exit.

Thanks for that. This should be the authorization for your mom's stay/temporary residence that is similar in size and on official paper to a visitor record/temporary residence permit/work permit. Congratulations to her and to you, for successfully getting a super visa (counter foil in passport) and the extension of the temporary residence authorization.

FYI. note that the visa (travel/entry document) is affixed to the passport (counterfoil); you may be holding and reading the "status document" affirming your mom's authorization for temporary residence. Hence the word "not valid for re-entry" - which means that document alone cannot be used to "travel/enter" the country. She needs the super-visa for entering/travelling into Canada. That document however, shows she is authorized to stay/reside in the country up to the stated date.

Congratulations again and all the best....
