I have no Family name both in Passport and IETLS mark sheet.

When I apply under CEC category what I should enter in "Family Name" section.

One of the lawyer asked me to take one of my given names and put it under family name and explain in a seperate letter the reason for the same.

What should I do, listen to lawyer or enter what is in my passport(like enter the name in Given Names and mark Family name as "Not applicable)

Hi,

My wife also did not have second name and my lawyer suggested me to obtain a new passport after adding my surname to her name...

I had to go through the whole process of changing her name by adding my surname ..and then obtained a new passport.

According to my lawyer, Family name is important while visa issuance, or else they will put your name in place of Family name ..and your given name will be blank ..

I am not sure how big the issue is ..?? Seniors may comment on this ...

Thanks Bahadur30 of your comments. Since I am in Canada I can't afford to change my surname in passport, also my passport is submitted for police clearance.

I was thinking can't we leave it as it is(given name: will have complete name, family name: blank or n/a) and then once we get PR we can have it amended.

As you suggested maybe somebody just like you would have had this issue, let's see what they advice.

Surname is a required field by canadian immigration, its their policy to put your whole given name under surname section if you don't have a different surname.....i am quite experienced in this matter.....in your case you are about to apply ...so dont waste your time in changing your name on your passport .....just leave the surname column blank...as visa officers put information from your passport...so write it as its on your passport....the only thing is going to happen is that they will put your given name in surname box according to their policy,,,its ok ....there is no prob in that.....all understand that....so just apply.....

Hi Panna,

Thanks for your straight forward answer.

Some document won't validate without surname. Is it fine to mention as "N/A" or "Not Applicable"

Just to clarify. You will not be able to generate the bar code in CEC package if you leave the surname field blank in the application.

Just to quote an example with due respect, it is a common practice in Southern India to not carry surname / last name. They do not even have surname recorded either in school records or passport. So this is not un usual. It is a quite common and CIC is well experienced in handling such cases.

You need to be using LNU (which stands for 'Last Name Unknown') acronym while filling up the surname field in the package and draft a covering letter explaining the same.

Hi Andy2109,

Thanks for your suggestion.

I also read in one of your other post you have recommended the same to another person and I see that you in fact checked with canadian immigration, so is "LNU" is suggested by them or is it that "LNU" or "N/A" would work provided we explain the reason in a seperate letter.

Thanks again for your help in advance!

LNU is as suggested by Canada Immigration. They also suggested to attach a covering letter explaining the same.

Awesome, will mention LNU as "Family name". Thanks a ton

Also how do we contact canadian immigration, I see phone number, email and address. But they mention it's only after we submit the application we can get appointment. Can you let me know how you were able to get in touch with them.
