Hello everyone,

Please help me. I am currently on my post graduate work permit and I am working as a "Data Analyst" in a retail firm. I have went through the hrsdc website and unfortunately I couldnt find "Data analyst" over there. The closest match is "Database analyst" but the job duties are very different from what I currently do.

Here are some of my major duties at work:

• Organize, summarize, display and interpret Sales/Inventory data using appropriate, clear and effective methods with the help of MS Excel, Word & PowerPoint (e.g. Text, Pivot tables, Graphs, Pie charts)
• Provide data to Vice President and the Financial Planning and Analysis group to support decision making
• Analyze and interpret different accounting reports and discuss issues with the finance director
• Interact with accounting department on daily basis to resolve issues related to the handling of different accounts, and identifying the variances in general ledger and UNIX system sales numbers
• Developed and Improved the Purchase Order Tracking System.
• Updating Financial statements and all the major accounts of the company using trial balance
• Preparing powerpoint presentations for my seniors

As you can see, I am also doing accounting work since my boss is a CA. So I also do some of her accounting work. I am pretty sure the work I do is far superior to some of the jobs that qualifies under SKill level O, A and B, but the only problem is it is not matching with the information on their website.

I would really appreciate if someone with experience and knowledge can help me on this.

thank you.

There is a NOC for everything. You can see all of them here: http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/noc/english/noc/2011/OccupationIndex.aspx but you will probably find yours here: http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/noc/english/noc/2011/Occupations.aspx?val=1

I am thinking 1254 might be the best fit? As long as your analyzing has something to do with research, say market research?

The way you see if it is skilled:

Starts with 0: Skill type 0 = skilled
Doesn't start with 0 but the 2nd digit is 0 or 1: Skill level A = skilled
Doesn't start with 0 but the 2nd digit is 2 or 3: Skill level B = skilled

Thank you very much for replying.

So 1254 is a skilled job and qualifies for PR right?

And it doesnt matter if the job title is something else? The duties should match right?

1254 is indeed a bit close to what I do currently but not an exact match.

Right, 1254 is skilled and qualified for immigration. The job duties is what matters, the title is not important. If you can not find a NOC that exactly represents your job, then you have to take the closest one. You can look and see if there is another that is a better match though.

You can also use the NOC matrix to see the skill level of an NOC code -

http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC/English/NOC/2011/html/Matrix.html

also take a look at this one (qualifies as skilled)

Always go with the job duties. The employer can call your job anything they want but if the job duties don't match, you can not apply under that NOC. Apply under the NOC where the duties fit and explain in a cover letter that it is your employers doing that the job title just happens to match a job title of another NOC.

Yes, more than good enough. You are applying under skill level B but your results are even good enough for A, see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/cec/language-testing.asp
