Dear Forum members,
I landed Canada with PR status on 22 July 2013 & received the SIN no. at airport itself. But due to some unavoidable situation I have to leave for India on day after tomorrow. I have only the carbon copy of landing paper IMM 5292 & the passport. I am staying at Brampton, Ontario. Receiving PR card at Canadian address will take time. I may re-enter Canada after a month. How to do that without PR card. Senior members (Qorax & others) please guide. Only one day left for anything to be done at Canada.

If you have a US visa, you can return to Canada from the United States through the land border. All you will need is the landing paper and your passport, since these documents should be enough to establish your PR status, thus, your rights for entry to Canada.

Remember though, if you're planning to cross the land border, you can only do so using either your private vehicle, or MAYBE, a rental car. If you're busing, or if you're travelling by plane, even from the States, then they still won't let you board the plane.

If you return to Canada in a private vehicle, such as your own car, you do not need a permanent resident card. You can use your Record of Landing (IMM 1000) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688) instead.

You would have been given these documents:

If you applied from overseas: at the same time as your visa
If you applied from within Canada: when you landed at your local visa office

An officer will ask you questions to make sure you meet all of the residency requirements before they allow you to come back to Canada.

If you're planning to return directly from India, then you would have to apply for travel documents, NOT from here in Canada, but from a visa office in India.

If you plan to return to Canada in a commercial vehicle — such as a plane, train, boat or bus — you must apply for a travel document at a visa office outside Canada before you return to Canada.

You should also check with the commercial operator (for example, the airline or bus company you will be using) to see what documents they need.
