Urgent experts help plz / PR renouncing

Hi experts
My wife and my son PR card expired in 2018
They couldn’t meet PR obligations
Now I want to sponsor them under family class.

My question is do they have to renounce their P residency (that has been expired) before I sponsore them under family class
Or
Can I sponsor them under family class without formally renouncing their previous expired p R status

They need to renounce their PR status first, before you can submit the sponsorship application. You cannot sponsor them while they are still PRs.

Why not apply to IRCC first to renew the pr with explanation why the requirement is not met? If they approve your application, you may not have to re-apply.
