The PGWP can not be longer than amount of time studied. Clearly stated on CIC website.

As per info in black and white, PGWP is of length equal to actual study ( they go by what is mentioned on graduate certificate which you get from college and submit with CIC).

two programs of each 1 year fetches you three years PGWP. Now, if we talk about actual cases how it works, in Ontario, some students have got PGWP of three years even after completing 1 year program + another 1 semester program (and not just one or two odd people but many have got three years PGWP this way).

So in your case, if you do 1 year + 1 year, it should fetch you 3 years PGWP.

so 1 year MSc and 1 year PGD will work? equals to 3 year PGWP?
As said earlier, if you go by what's in black and white as on following CIC link;

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-postgrad.asp

Work permit is of no longer than the actual study period. However, what I have mentioned earlier is a clean simple fact that anybody who has spent even 3 months in Canada knows. 1 year + 1 year fetches you 3 years PGWP.

Though smart people are going for the option of 1 year (2 semesters) + another program (1 semester) which also gets them 3 years PGWP.

Now another trick to it is; 1 year program when selected, better select of 2 semesters (that too not back to back semester program). This is a work around to have more time to work full time (as most people do to earn their next semester fee). 1 year program of 2 semesters can be finished in 8 months which means 2 semesters back to back and there you go. However, after completing first semester you become eligible for OCWP and if you take a break from one semester (which in no ways impacts your PGWP/PR/PNP etc etc chances) and during this break you can work full time (legally). so You complete 2 semesters in 1 year in which you work for 4 months full time and 4 months part time during your studies.

Then opt for 1 semester program and that's it. Apply for PGWP (within 90 days from the day are finished with your studies)

Impact of length of program of study in Canada and the length of the work permit

A Post-Graduation Work Permit cannot be valid longer than the official length of your program of study in Canada. For example, students graduating from a four-year degree program might be eligible for a three-year year work permit. Students graduating from an eight-month certificate program would only be eligible for a work permit of eight months.

If the official length of your program of study is:

  • less than eight months
you are not eligible for this program
  • less than two years but more than eight months
you may get a work permit for a period no longer than the length of your program of study (for example, if you studied for nine months, a work permit may be issued for a period of nine months)
  • two years or more
a work permit may be issued for three years

If the PG diploma course is of one year than the study permit issued by CIC will be valid for just one year. How can than someone pursue another course of 4 months because the study permit will expire by the time the student completes that one year course?

Ok thanks
Do students usually do so? Do they obtain an extension on their study permit to pursue an extra course easily?
And do we need to extend the study permit we have for the first program or get a completely new one?

it's called extension of study permit but you are issued a new study permit covering the duration of program. Now, it's not just for a new program. If you enroll for a 1 year program, you get one year of study permit. Now what if you fail in one semester and somehow you don't complete your studies within 1 year, doesn't it mean flight back to home country? no it doesn't, you need to apply for extension and many students do so with no problem at all (unless you really complicate things, starting full time, completing one semester than dropping one semester and than finally converting into part time studies).

I read your another post in different thread, if you get study permit for 1 year for a 1 year program, after completion of the program, you can apply for extension of study permit for next program. You need LOA from the college and have paid fee at least of one semester and some cash in your account, you will have it. Many students do so and face no problem at all.
