Hi Everyone!

As the title reads, I’m trying to understand how CL sponsorship works and if what we have now helps our case.
I have received PR and completed my first landing with intent / plan to move by next July. I registered before I met my partner and received my ITA just as my partner and I completed a year of being together. Now, we recently got engaged and have been living together for a few months. Overall we’ve been together for 3 years. He has also applied for his Express Entry but no luck since. We only recently found out about the CLS as our agent didn’t inform us at all.
So far for proof of CL we’ve got:
- opening a joint account under our names to put money into for savings and joint purchases such as dinners, groceries, electricity bills etc
- engagement ring
- pictures
- can get letters from friends as well.
Now the main thing we were banking on was to add my name to his tenancy contract but: in order to do that he needs to start a new contract which changes his existing rental price and makes it higher. We live in the UAE and even with a marriage contract it’s hard to add two names to the lease agreement. I can be listed officially as a co-occupant but it doesn’t show in the official contract. Also, because of our differences in salary, he’ll continue to pay rent but I’ll be helping with the utilities bills - even though it’s linked again to tenancy contract and won’t reflect my name. The other thing I’ve read is mails but we don’t get mails here and all the bills I have that puts address on I guess is my phone bill / contract?
So that kind of is stressing me out and our agent has no clue.
Also, because we weren’t married they listed his EE as single and said we can’t change with an engagement so is there anything we need to do to declare engagement or Relationship status on his EE?
I know this is a huge read and I thank you for reading and your answers. Just quite clueless and needing help! Don’t want to have to look into a very long long LDR

Since you're engaged and living together, don't bother with this common law stuff. Just get married and then you apply to sponsor him when you arrive in Canada.

Either way: you cannot sponsor him until you are residing in Canada.

He may or may not be able to get a TRV before you leave for Canada. After you apply to sponsor him (from within Canada), spouse can apply for a TRV after acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) with higher chance of being approved.

I went through common law sponsorship. Based on your information, I would argue against going that way. First it's not perfectly clear whether or not you and your partner declared your statuses. When you did your landing, were you already one year together? Have you declared the change of status at the time of landing? Secondly, having your partner applying separately for entry is a concern as it would appear to the immigration as if he tries all means of finding an entry to Canada. Third, when he did apply were you already living one year together?

Anyway, just get married and proceed this way. Common law sponsorship works great if you have so many solid proofs that you have a difficulty to chose from and not trying to figure out what can be done to prove it

The timing is very important. Did you live together for a year before he landed in Canada?

Answer is in the original post, I believe:
just as my partner and I completed a year of being together. Now, we recently got engaged and have been living together for a few months.
Since distinction was drawn between 'being together' and 'living together', seems pretty clear.
