Hi all,,,,,i'm confused. Has anyone gotten a TRV for their wife after getting sponsorship aproval? Some people say chances are better of getting a TRV after sponsorship approval. Other people say it is a RED FLAG to imigration officials when they see your wife applies for TRV because they don't believe she will leave Canada if her husband is there.

What's the best way to prove you don't want to break immigration law? Just want to spend a few months with new wife.

Thx,,,,,,,Bri

Note: This is only my experience. I don't know how it differs from others.

My husband was a Canadian, I am American.

I came to Canada on May 26, 2009 to visit my husband for the summer (we were only seeing each other then). While I was here, with my daughter with me, my husband I got married. When we first entered Canada, we were both given stamps in our passports rather then a TRV. I believe this is customary. Our stamps indicated we were allowed to remain for 6 months. In August, we went to a land crossing and got a student visa for my daughter so that she could remain in Canada and go to school. After that, I applied for an extension of my temporary visitor status (based on my passport stamp), and was approved until August 2010, which is what I asked for, to make it match my daughter's student visa.

We got our medicals done in Calgary, for an outland application (make sure the medical folks use the right forms if you are doing outland as opposed to inland), and we paid our fees, and finally got our package submitted in March.

In late March I had to take an emergency trip back to the States. When I returned, I had my paperwork with me at the land crossing (it was cheaper/easier for me to fly to montana then drive across the border). The immigration agent appreciated that I was very well prepared and it was painless, even though I had been very nervous about this. I brought:

A. Marriage license
B. Receipt of payment of application fees
C. Printout of tracking page showing my package had been received at CIC-M.
D. Passport (obviously) with TRV in the back.

Luckily, I also had an itinerary for another trip I am making this summer, so I brought that as well.

The immigration officer told me to come on in, and reminded me that I had to leave Canada or apply for a visitor extension for myself and my daughter by the end of August. He also mentioned he could see that our application was in the system, (this was before we had heard anything yet), and wished us the best of luck. While I know that some folks have had some very unfortunate experiences, I have to say that almost all of the stress of immigration so far has been self-generated. The actual experiences I've had at the border have all gone very smoothly, even though I was very nervous about them ahead of time.

Hope this helps someone out there -- I know I've gotten lots of reassurance and information about how to be prepared for crossing the border here from others.

Also I think its worth mentioning that honesty is always the best policy, and that they generally seem to recognize if you are making an effort to comply with the rules, come prepared, and be thoughtful/courteous.

Well the fact is if she is required to do an interview she will have to go home to do it anyway. And you can try its not a red flag if they give it to her they do if they dont they dont. The whole thing about a visitors visa is you have to prove that once it runs out you will return home.and they think if she is trying to get to Canada sponsored what to say she wont stay illegally if she gets to visit. So like i said you can try but 90% of the time its denied.
If we could do this dont you think we would all be doing it.

It is possible we did it the first time rejected applied again after being married and sponsorship approved, we just mentioned that we would not want to jeopardize our chances of PR by over staying and what else we had in mind to do while she was here and it was granted for two months.

Americans don't need a TRV, because they are visa exempt. If you are from a visa exempt country you can generally get in with a PR app in progress if you can prove that you have ties to your country. If you do have to have a TRV to enter Canada, however, it's harder to get one when you have your app in process.. but she won't be 'red flagged' for being turned down, so you might as well try.

We applied for Temporary before married and were refused. A couple years later...after marriage...and after we were approved for Sponsorship she was approved for a visit. It can be done and having an application in process can actually show you are following the process and rules properly and look better for you. In my invite letter I wrote a detailed plan of the visit and made sure to mention the PR application and gave the file number. As well I indicated that after the visit she was returning home to await communication for the PR application and any possible interviews or anything required.

And really...if you have an application already past sponsorship approval you would be a fool to screw it up by overstaying at that point. I tried to even show we understood that by mentioning she would be returning home to await communications about the PR app and to be available for an interview if required.

I came to Canada from the US in Oct 2009 for a visit with my fiancee at the tme. We were married in Dec 2009 and applied for PR in March 2010 and for an extension for my vist. I just got a letter this week dated May 3 that I got a TRV good til May 2011. For the extension, we sent in proof of PR app (copy of reciept and sponsorship papers) and a letter with my husband's signature saying that we would be responsible for me finacially while I'm waiting for PR. I've read in many places on this site that most people will get an extension if they have applied for PR and send proof.
