Hello everyone,
I am looking for advice on applying for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) for my wife while I travel to Canada using my eTA. We are both from Argentina and hold Argentina passports, and I also hold an Italian passport, which allows me to enter Canada visa-free with an eTA, which I have done several times in the past to visit relatives. My wife, however, needs a TRV to travel.
We plan to visit my Canadian relatives in July 2026 and also use Canada as a layover for future international travel (e.g., to Japan in late 2025). Since we will always be traveling together, I initially thought we could apply for our visas at the same time, but I’ve read that applying together as a couple when only one of us needs a visa might complicate things.
I am the main earner in our household, working as a freelancer with an income of about $3,500–4,000 USD per month. My wife works part-time for the local government. We own property in Argentina, including a house under construction, land, and other real estate. My Canadian relatives (who are citizens) can provide a letter of invitation.
My aunt and uncle met my wife in 2023 during a visit to my family, and then came back in 2024 for our wedding with one of my cousins.
I visited them on 2014, 2017 and 2019 for the wedding of my other cousin.
Here are my main concerns:
We want to do everything correctly to maximize the chances of approval. If anyone has gone through a similar situation, your insights would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Here are my main concerns:
- Should we apply together, or is it better for my wife to apply alone, since I do not need a TRV?
- If she applies alone, how should we present our financial situation? Since I am the main breadwinner, would it raise concerns if her bank account does not reflect our full financial strength?
- Would mentioning our planned layover in Canada before traveling to Japan be a red flag for the visa officer?
- Would a letter of invitation from my Canadian relatives be beneficial, or would it not be relevant in this case?
- Any advice on how to best present our ties to Argentina to strengthen the application?
- My wife does not have much history of traveling outside the country, only to countries where she did not need a passport in the region, I have traveled before to Canada, Europe and US. Is that an issue for her?
