Hello,
I need advice on the following matter. Is it possible to switch a single entry visa to multiple entry during extension? what is the possible way to change single entry TRV to multiple entry not leaving Canada?
thank you

Hi Suin,

For you to be able to switch to a multiple entry, I think you need to apply for a new TRV to a consulate/visa office outside Canada. Extension requests are thru CPC-V.

thank you for your reply. do you mean it is impossible to extend it through CPC-V? if they extend it will be the same 1 entry visa? can they extend it right for a few years in advance?

Once inside Canada, visitor visa extension requests are done at CPC-V. I don't know if they do it years in advance. One of the forum members was granted one year visit visa extension. But you can not re-enter Canada on a VR alone. You need a valid visa if you are not from a "visa-free" country, to be able to enter again. Applying for single/multiple entry visa is done at consulate offices outside Canada.

I honestly don't know because the visitor record specifies:"this does not authorize re-entry", so probably not. Maybe PMM and Leon would know.

I have read on the CIC website that -- when choosing between a single-entry and multiple-entry visa -- the visitor can visit the USA and return to Canada on a single-entry visa.

Hi,

Yes within the validity of the single-entry visa. But with an approved extension, you get a visitor record which states "this does not authorize re-entry".

how can we find out about it? maybe 're-entry' means to leave the North America itself?

Hi,

Maybe CIC will have a definite answer. I have tried leaving for the US and coming back to Canada within the validity of my single-entry visa but didn't try leaving for fear of not being allowed back :( with my visitor-record.

by visitor-record you mean extension? I guess the best way is to contact Canadian border service. I really do not know the answer.

Yes. When a person in Canada on a visitor visa (TRV) requests for an extension, s/he is issued a visitor record if granted the extension. On the visitor record is a leave by date. But it also has "This does not authorize re-entry".

So, then,, how does Canada define "re-entry"?

If with a single-entry visa one can exit Canada to the USA and re-enter Canada, then maybe even with an extension tyhat says "This does not authorize re-entry" you can take excuraions to the USA.

We need an expert to confirm this point, because the consequence of error would be serious.

If my memory serves me correctly, I remember reading that when you are on a TRV and apply for an extension, you are automatically applying for an extension of your TRV as well if you need one. If you read through the instructions manual for extensions carefully you should find the information, because I clearly remember seeing something about this when I applied for an extension, though since I do not require a TRV I more or less skipped that information.

If you don't mind me asking, Suin, didn't you land a while ago?

As long as you only travel to the U.S.A. or St-Pierre-et-Miquelon you can re-enter even if your document says it is not valid for re-entry. I did this multiple times on my old work permit that had the "Not valid for re-entry" legend. (I also checked with the CIC call centre, which confirmed this information.)

If you leave to another country you will not be let back on that document, though.

thank you for your reply, Karlshammar. this info was not for me, as I am a landed immigrant now. I was asked this question by a friend of mine in driving school.
