Hi everyone!
Me and my bf submitted an application for common-law sponsorship together with an OWP application last week.
My work permit and TRV expires on January 2016.
The thing is we have a trip to Mexico on April.
& final payment for the trip is on Dec. 15, which is non-refundable.
Can I apply for a TRV extension so I can be assured that I can re-enter Canada on April?

Thanks in advance!! :) :)

Are you guys applying inland? If so, I believe either you or the b/f, whichever one is the applicant, has to remain in Canada during the entire process, unless your vacation was only a couple weeks or so

Yes, we applied inland. Our vacation is only for a week, but we find that it's a risk to take to pay for the trip (non-refundable) and not getting my OWP by March, because I have to re-apply for a TRV, right?

FYI - Having a TRV and/or OWP won't guarantee you will be able to re-enter Canada.

You'll definitely need to apply for a new TRV ahead of your trip if you hold a non-visa exempt passport. Just extending your TRV won't allow you to re-enter.

What's the difference "in purpose" between a TRV extension and just a TRV? I thought this is to allow you to enter Canada, isn't it?
If I get my OWP by March, I can still apply for a new TRV, but time-wise it's very risky especially that I heard their prioritizing the refugee program right now.

Staying in Canada will not be a problem for me, but leaving then coming back, I just needed something to assure me that I can re-enter.

There is no permit or visa that will guarantee you re-entry to Canada. Only Canadian citizens and PRs have that right.

You cannot extend a TRV. If it is single entry, you use it once and would then need to apply for a new one if re-entering Canada. If it's multiple entry, it's valid until it expires and you would then need a new one.

A TRV does not allow entry into Canada; it allows a non visa-exempt person to board a commercial carrier to come to Canada. Whether you are allowed entry is determined by CBSA.

With an inland application, it is advised to not leave Canada. If you are refused re-entry, your inland app is cancelled.

Thanks so much for the reply, but is there any way that I can just go for a vacation for a week then come back? Or should I just keep my fingers crossed that I receive my OWP by March then apply for a new TRV then hope for the best when coming back?
