Hi There,
I entered Canada as a student in 2016. I had a TRV valid for 2 years till Aug 2018 and a study permit valid for the same time.
I changed my Study permit to Post Graduation Work Permit and its valid till 2021. I have a Business meeting in US for 3 days(Have a valid visa for US), but i don't have a valid TRV as it expired in Aug.
I can submit for a renewal but, it will take a month. I read on CIC that ,It's ok to travel to US alone with a expired TRV. Could you please give some more details?
I am travelling by flight and i read in other forums that, Airlines may not allow me to board a flight.
Please help and thanks in advance.

According to CIC, they state that:-

Expired temporary resident visa

  • You can request to return to Canada on your original temporary resident visa, even if it is expired, if:
    • you will only visit the U.S. or St. Pierre and Miquelon; and
    • you will return to Canada before the end of your approved stay in Canada.
An officer will confirm whether you meet all the requirements before allowing you to come back to Canada. If you visit any country other than those listed above, you will need a new temporary resident visa.

What I understood from this is that you can go to the US, of course, provided that you have a valid U.S visa. Now what I got from this is that approved stay would refer to your PGWP which is valid till 2021 and you are returning well before that. They are emphasizing that you can only visit the U.S. or St. Pierre and Miquelon and visiting other countries will require you to reapply.

From CIC standpoint you are clear to enter Canada as you are authorized to re-enter Canada. Some airlines who are not familiar with such minute details might cause issues. I would suggest if Visa and time permitting you should try and go to the land border and you woudn't have a problem with the flights. You could take a flight to the nearest airport or a greyhound or even a taxi or something like that. Ideally, it shouldn't be an issue as what you're doing is legal. I would suggest printing out the CIC page about this and keep it with you if the airline has an issue and make a plan B to the land border.
