Triple citizenship? Am I already a citizen of Canada?

Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but anyways here it goes. I am 24 and I'm applying for proof of Canadian citizenship. I'm born and live in the US and both of my parents were born in England so I hold A US and UK passport. My grandfather on my dads side was born in Canada so my father became a naturalized citizen through decent in the early 80s thus making my father a triple citizen of the US, UK, and Canada. Now since MY father was a naturalized citizen of Canada before I was born would that mean I am a Canadian citizen because I was born to at least one Canadian parent? I applied and included my fathers Canadian citizenship papers as well as my grandfathers Canadian birth certificate. Online it says a decision was made but I'm just very curious if it will come back with a positive result. I'm also curious to know if it will affect the decision if my father has never been to Canada but is still a citizen. I am planning on moving to Toronto in the fall so this is very important. Thanks!

Unfortunately it is not likely you can obtain Canadian citizenship by decent.

Please see below

Canadian citizenship by birth outside Canada to a Canadian citizen parent (citizenship by descent) is now limited to the first generation born outside Canada.

This means that, in general, persons who were not already Canadian citizens immediately before April 17, 2009 and who were born outside Canada to a Canadian parent are not Canadian if:

their Canadian parent was also born outside Canada to a Canadian parent (the person is therefore the second or subsequent generation born outside Canada), or
their Canadian parent was granted Canadian citizenship under section 5.1, the adoption provisions of the Citizenship Act (the person is therefore the second generation born outside Canada)

Yes but since my father was born and recived citizenship before my birth, and 2009 would that not make me technically a first generation Canadian? Or even if I was considered a second generation canadian wouldn't the 2009 limitations not apply since I was born prior to 2009?

I believe since you were born after 1977 and your dad was a citizen by descent(you said naturalized but I think you meant decent?) before your birth, that you are infact a citizen. However, if you have any children abroad, they will not be.

I could be wrong though, it's quite confusing and there are a lot of factors involved. Report back when you get your answer :)

It doesn't matter when you were born. You are 2nd generation born abroad therefore are not entitled to citizenship by decent. The only exception would be if your father was Canadian military serving outside of the country at time of your birth, which from your post I would understand that he was not.
