Travelling with valid Work Permit and applying for a WP extension

Hi everyone,

My work permit is valid until May 18th and I have to travel by the end of February, coming back to Canada the 3rd March. The thing is: my wife and I wanted to apply for an extension of the WP today, and we bumped into this info on the CIC:

"You can leave Canada and come back. However, one of three things will happen when you return to Canada.

1. You may be allowed to come back to Canada as a visitor, if we have not yet decided to extend your work permit. If this is the case, you cannot work until you get your work permit extension. The officer at the port of entry may ask you to prove you have enough money to support yourself in Canada.
2. You may be allowed to come back to Canada as a worker, if the officer at the port of entry finds out that we extended your work permit while you were away.
3. You may be asked to apply for a new work permit at the port of entry."

But as this makes no sense to me, I was wondering if they are referring to an invalid work permit at the moment of entry.
To me it doesn't make sense that they wouldn't let you in if you have a VALID work permit while processing its extension.

I really appreciate if you could help me figure this out.

That applies to people on Implied Status. You won't be on Implied Status, as your original work permit will still be valid.
