Travelling to the U.S. with expired TRV

Hi all. I recently got my Study Permit extension approved, but I urgently need to travel to the U.S. and I don't have time to wait until my TRV extension will be approved. I've heard that you can travel to the U.S. ONLY and come back even if your visa is expired, but you have a valid Study or Work Permit. Is that correct?

Sorry u cant go. You can enter to US but it will be impossible for u to enter canada because a valid TRV is required. Study permit only allow u to stay in canada not entry

Well, this is what CIC says about it....

Expired temporary resident visa

You can request to return to Canada on your original temporary resident visa, even if it is expired, if:
you will only visit the U.S. or St. Pierre and Miquelon; and
you will return to Canada before the end of your approved stay in Canada.
