My husband and I have recently married in Ontario. We are applying outland since I need the access to come and go from Toronto to NJ freely to visit my elderly and ailing father. I have been traveling back and forth for about 2 years staying only weekends, at most 2 weeks at a time. My husband and I are tired of not being together longer than weekends and with my father doing a little better, I am looking to leave NJ and stay in Canada for months at a time. I fully know that I am unable to work or go to school, and my husband will be full provider. I don't need a visitor visa and I have never had trouble crossing before, but have only stayed for short durations. Has anyone experienced difficulty traveling back and forth while outland PR is in process?? Once I give up everything in the states (apartment, job, etc.) to stay with him in Canada visiting NJ occassionally for my parents, there is no going back other than relying on family if Canada denies me. Any advice or people's experience would be helpful thank you!

My wife came to Canada as a visitor from the USA. Of course we wanted to stay together so she applied for a visitor extension visa just before the 6 months deadline. The visa was approved allowing us to remain in Canada while the PR is in process. They gave her 1 year extention, twice already. We have been back to the USA on holiday during this time and had no problems reentering Canada at Pearson Airport. The PR application is Outland and we're expecting COPR in the near future.
Good luck with your application.

Thank you so much for your response! It puts some of my nervousness at ease! I do need to visit my father back in the US probably every couple of months as he is ill. As long as I have no problems getting back in, I am happy to give up everything here and be with my love!
Thank you again!

Just make sure you don't tell them at the border that you are moving here
You are still visiting :)

Anyone know exactly what they are looking for when they are looking for you to have ties back in the US? I'm giving up my apartment and my job to stay with my husband, so what ties would I have left? I can always use my mother's address as my home address. I'd still hold a current state board license in physical therapy but no currect job. Plus, I have proof my father is in a nursing home, and he is my main reason for even coming back to US to visit him. I just don't want to get turned away for not having enough ties to US.

When they ask, they are typically looking for things like proof of employment, proof of school enrollment, proof that you have a primary residence in the US, proof of assets in the US, things like that.

If you have something that shows your mother's address as your primary address - that would be good (e.g. bank statement, credit card statement).

But they won't necessarily ask...

Okay thank you, all I'll have is my mother's address. I'm in the process of changing everything over. Other than that because I'm staying up with my husband for months at a time while our PR application is in process.

Again - no guarantee they will ask. But it would be very good to have some sort of official document (again, banks statement, phone bill, etc.) with your mother's address on it.

Don't pack like you're moving and everything should be fine.

Ya I'm going to store most of my stuff at my mother's and plan on traveling with 2 suitcases and my 2 cats and that is how I plan to drive over the border. I'll make sure I carry a phone bill and bank statements with my mother's address, thank you.

I'm guessing you looked at the processing time for the New York office. New PR apps aren't currently being sent to either the NY office or the LA office. American apps are currently being processed in CPP-Ottawa. The posted processing time is 15 months, though if you have a look at the Ottawa thread, most are getting PR around 8-10 months.

IMM0008, question 4, asks you to choose an immigration office for processing. Choose CPP-Ottawa

I really am hoping there are no snags and we get ours in 8-10 months. I'm just waiting on my marriage certificate to be sent and my husbands tax forms...then off it goes and fingers crossed! I miss him and this has been very hard on us for our first few months of marriage. I'm just looking for visit my dad every couple of months for a long weekend and then return, just hoping no difficulty with returning to Canada. And yes originally I looked at the NY office but I have recently learned they go to Ottawa

Hi,

I have a similar situation. How is the visitor's visa extended?
thanks.

You can apply online from the CIC website.
