If you are visa exempt to Canada, get on a plane and fly back. When you arrive at immigration, show your expired PR card.

If you are not visa exempt, you can apply for a US visa. If you get it, you can fly to the US and cross over to Canada by land with your expired card.

If you are not visa exempt and can't get a US visa, you will have to apply for a travel document at a Canadian embassy in your home country.

Hi Leon, Do you think that crossing the border (walking) won't cause any troubles with regard to your PR renewal application or your citizenship application?! I mean will they report you or put a question mark on you that might result in a delay in processing your PR application?! Thanks

If you don't meet the residency requirements and admit it or they have a strong reason to believe that you don't, then they can report you. However, you would face the same problems if you were to apply for a travel document. If you are outside Canada and have applied to renew your PR card, you must get back somehow to collect it. If you have applied for citizenship, you must get back somehow for the test and oath. If you were to walk across the border at Niagara falls with a day pack, they would probably ask less than if you enter in a rented car on US plates with a load of suitcases.

Hi Leon -

My PR application has been approved recently, and I have to travel to US and this will happen before I receive my new card. Do you think it will be good if I show them a copy of my approved PR renewal and hope for the best? Do you think it will be risky even with an approved case?
