My Philippines girlfriend has a multiple entry Temporary tourist visa that expires in a couple of months. She used it to visit me in Canada last year and is currently using it to visit me here again. She has a return flight ticket taking her home on a date a few weeks before the visa expires.

She and I are giving serious thought to marriage and may soon obtain a marriage licence here. We need some guidance please.

First of all, her mother back home is very sick and my girlfriend wants to briefly visit her very soon. Her airline will allow her to change the return date on her ticket to the near future. After her visit with her mother she wants to return here.

Question 1: If she leaves Canada can she expect to be readmitted here using her present temporary visa if she shows the marriage licence along with a supporting letter from me, assuming she returns here before the expiry date of the tourist visa.

We would need to purchase a new ticket for her to return to Canada and are thinking of her getting a one-way ticket and using the same tourist visa. The idea of buying just an one-way ticket sounds attractive as we don't know when she will go back to her country.

Question 2: Will it be a problem for her re-entering Canada with that visa if she does not have a ticket returning her back to her country? We plan to marry here and then submit an application for a renewal of her tourist visa. Beyond that, we're not sure what to do.

1. She should be allowed it if her visa is valid. However whether she is allowed in is up to the immigration officer she meets when she enters Canada.
2. Yes - it will be a problem. The airline most likely won't let her board the airplane to Canada with a one way ticket. A one way ticket will also increase the chances she will run into issues reentering Canada when she meets the immigration officer. She needs to get a two way ticket.

Yes #2 is true, you know the old saying with TRVs:

"Buy a one way ticket here, get a one way ticket back home"

She may not even make it to the boarding gate at the airport in the PH on her flight to Canada - as PH immigration officials at the exit point will ask presentation of a return ticket as she only has a visitor visa.
