I've finally got my profile submitted for Express entry but was very upset to see that my score is around 365 -- nowhere near the 440 ish required. Even though I have a good education, years of good work experience in a cat A NOC (software engineering) and good english language skills, my age drags my score down so much that I just can't see how I could possibly get my score up to 440ish. Even a job offer would only bring me another 50 points leaving me at around 415.

I currently run a ltd company where I am the only employee -- an IT contractor, but I gather the self-employed/business immigration route is not an option unless you are in certain sectors like farming and creative arts.

Can anyone cheer me up at all -- is there something I'm missing, some route I haven't found?

thanks

There would be a way for you, but with French as well or maybe if you find a suitable PNP for you.

Realistically I don't see myself learning French. I have no gift for languages and every year that passes while learning it would lessen my score further anyway due to my age. I'm looking for a PNP but not finding anything :(

Do you have 150-200K in assets? You can look into provincial programs for entrepreneurs.

About half that in cash; no other assets. I'm not a entrepreneur though, I only have one company with one employee (myself), for tax efficiency reasons. From my reading I would not qualify as an entrepreneur.

Is there a particular reason you want to move to Canada? In terms of economic immigrants Canada needs young people or young families who will work for the next 30-40 years and counteract the low birth weight.

You should assume it won't be possible to secure a job offer. Focus on other ways to increase your points and/or explore other programs to apply through.

I assume you have maxed out your IELTS scores? If not, re-write IELTS until you do. Agreed your age has a big impact on your score - unfortunately nothing you can do about that.

If immigrating to Canada is a priority, recommend you dedicate time to reading through the threads in the PNP section of the forum to understand how each of these programs works and whether there is an opportunity for you to be selected through one of these.

I lived in Canada for 6 months about 10 years ago and loved it there so it's always been on my mind since. Over the last 10 years or so the situation in the UK where I'm from has gone from bad to worse though. House prices are now so ludicrously high that if you don't already own you never will (unless of course you have wealthy parents). Despite having a good income I genuinely can't afford to live in the UK. I'll look elsewhere if Canada is a definite no-go but I would be very sad as I love the place and still have many years of work ahead of me.

I got 9 out of 9 in three of my IELTS categories but got 7.5 for writing for some reason. even if I retook it though and got all 9's it would only make a few points' difference wouldn't it?

I will read the PNP threads thanks.

PNPs are usually about timing. At this time of the year, most of them have already closed. You may want to keep checking at the start of next year. A lot of PNPs favor IT fields. There is still hope.

Think it may be more about Brexit because the housing issue isn't a new thing. You'll run into similar issues in Canada but not as bad as London. Vancouver and Toronto housing prices will probably shock you if you haven't been here in 10 years.

It's nothing to do with Brexit at all, and house prices have certainly got more out of my reach in the past ten years. They were stupidly high 10 years ago it's true but they have gone even more nuts since, plus I've lost ten years' of potential payback time in mortgage lenders' eyes since then.

I'm aware of house prices in Canada, I wasn't hoping to move to Vancouver or Toronto I know they're nuts there too.

It is about Brexit (seeing how the negotiations are going or not going along).
Sorry, but being somewhere 10 years ago for 6 months (either as a tourist or on working holiday), will if anything give you very distorted picture of the current reality in the country.

Canada follows the same logic UK does. So where are jobs and better living, there the housing prices are high. And where there is lacking of such (and / or very bad weather on the top) prices are low.
Same like you can find rather cheap house somewhere in UK (Northern Ireland or the northern outskirts of Scotland for example), except you do not wish to live there (unless you are wealthy, retired with good money and you do not mind the weather).

What you compare now is of course the pricing to be lower than in UK (for a comparable size of the community). But you compare all that given your current position and salary and what mortgage you could afford in UK.
Nobody can tell that you will get a similar job here. Nobody can tell if your yearly savings here will not be actually lower, which in perspective will make housing here same way unachievable it was for you in UK.

I thank you for your helpful input, but really, if my desire to move to Canada was in any way related to Brexit I would have said so. Why would complete strangers think they know my motivations better than I do myself!? Very odd.
