*** Timelines for Inland Common-law and Open Work Permit ***

Hi everyone,

My common law partner and I have just submitted our application for PR and OWP last week on October 4th. We are nervous as to how long it takes to get the OWP or if I would get it at all since my partner’s last year income was very low, appx $15k.... Any similar case like ours?
Although we have a lawyer who is in charge of our application, we’re still very nervous. and he said we should expect a 2-month wait to hear back from CIC.

And in this thread, please feel free to share your timelines. We would love to have an insight as to how long it takes for them to process each step.

The AOR generally comes after 2 months while the OWP gets approved at around 4 months.

I'm not too sure why last year's income would provide a reason not to get an OWP.

The income won't impact the application unless the sponsor was collecting welfare.

The OWP takes 3 to 4 months to receive.

I’m an inland spousal sponsorship applicant, and I received AOR 6 weeks from the date of my application receipt. I got my OWP approved a little under 3 months from the date of receipt/6 weeks after AOR.

There was a few of us who had a similar timeline on his forum, and we established pretty quickly that we were some of the lucky ones that got processed a bit quicker than others.

There were others who had their applications received before ours, but had AOR confirmed after ours, and some who waited the full 4 months for their OWPs too.

There’s nothing you can do to really speed it up, just try to keep occupied on something. I’m impatient, so I know what it’s like to be waiting for things out of your control. I would start having a look at jobs, and getting a feel for what’s out there in your range of skills, experience, etc. It can take a couple of weeks or more to get interviews lined up once you have your OWP, so get a head start on this now so you’re ready to go once it’s in hand.

I already have a job offer waiting for me to take asa I have the permit, so I think it’s time to relax and learn new things like another language

He’s not on welfare or bankruptcy. I’m relieved with the info. It actually makes sense that no matter how much you make low or high you have a right to reunite with your partner. So yeah Im relieved! thanks for your info

Can you also share if you submitted all the documents like police check and schedule a, ect in 1 go?
The lawyer required all those docs from us. However, I learned that almost everyone noted down the dates and persons we are with in each photos while our lawyer didn’t ask us to do so. Will this affect the processing time?

Good to hear you’ve got a job waiting for you, that’s one headache you won’t have down the line. Out of interest, what type of job is it? I’m always curious as to what type of jobs people take on over here when they get their work permits approved.

For the photos, I noted the dates of when they were taken (month and year), location, and a brief description. I also put who was who in them, just their titles though, like mother, sister-in-law, brother, etc. I doubt it’ll be a big issue if you didn’t, particularly if your lawyer didn’t deem it necessary. You’d hope that they know better than all of us!

Good for you. Hard work pays off, and you’re obviously good at what you do if a former colleague wants you work at their own company! You’ve got what a lot of newcomers lack, a network. You obviously had to work to establish that during your previous work permit, but a network is great for finding work when you need it. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know, as the old saying goes. Once a newcomer gets their first job, it will always be easier to transition and find different work when required.

As for the photos, if they’ve already been submitted, there’s nothing you can do to add descriptions now. If it’s a big issue for IRCC, they may return the application, but I can’t see that happening personally. Your lawyer would have a lot to answer for if that happens... You obviously had to work to establish that during your previous work permit, but a network is great for finding work when you need it. It was pretty hard for me to get an interview right when I graduated as an international student with very little Canadian experience. So I spent a few days working on my resume to make it perfect with no grammar mistake and nicely presented my skills and qualifications. You know I had to print almost 100 copies to drop them off in person and finally I got a handful of emails... Also my experience at interviews is that you don’t let interviewers know that you are not local, they’ll doubt your ability to fit in with the team. That’s just my own experience anyway

I have done my research on CIC website about proof of relationship, and they don’t specifically mention that we have to note the dates and persons in each photos. So I guess it isn’t important to do so. We included pretty everything in our app, including police record from my home country and schedule A, except for the upfront medical exam which I think they don’t allow anymore. So my finger crossed for our app to be one of the lucky ones

Most September applicants got their AORs 22 to 29 days after submission. So your husband should be getting yours by email between Oct 19 and 26 if the processing time stays the same.

It was pretty hard for me to get an interview right when I graduated as an international student with very little Canadian experience. So I spent a few days working on my resume to make it perfect with no grammar mistake and nicely presented my skills and qualifications. You know I had to print almost 100 copies to drop them off in person and finally I got a handful of emails... Also my experience at interviews is that you don’t let interviewers know that you are not local, they’ll doubt your ability to fit in with the team. That’s just my own experience anyway

As you said, get your resume perfectly put together, sell yourself/your skills well, get references for the background checks employers do, and work hard getting your applications in quickly.

You should be fine with the photos, I wouldn’t be concerned if it was me.

And yes, I’m just letting CIC decide lol because you never know what they think when they take a look at your application. So you’re right no need to worry about it.
