Hi all,

I have a son who spent 1 year in Canada on a student visa before he became a canadian permanent resident. Does that 1 year count towards his time towards PR residency obligations?

Also, when u cross the land border with the states in a private vehicle, they do not stamp your passport, so how do they know if you left canada/north america via the states and came back from the states and only told them u left for a day?

No - the year he spent in Canada as a student does not count towards his residency obligation. However he may be able to include these days in his citizenship day count.

They don't stamp passports at the border - however they do often scan them into their computers.
