Hi All,

I'm planning to emigrate to Canada but I can't do it before 2011 (perhaps even a bit longer) so my question is,

If I apply now and get my visa within 6 to 12 months (as promissed by the government under the new rules), will I have to relocate within a certain period of time to avoid loosing the visa?
Is there any period specified in the immigration rules that you have to move to Canada otherwise you may loose your status?

All your help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

When you get the PR visa, it is normally valid until a year after you did your medicals. That can give you several months before you have to use the visa and "land" in Canada. When you land, you activate your PR status and normally apply for your PR card at the same time. The PR card will be mailed to your Canadian address in about a month to 6 weeks. If you don't have time to hang around for it, you can give the address of a friend or relative in Canada who will mail you the card when it arrives so you have it when you want to go to Canada again. If you don't have a friend or relative in Canada, you can tell them to hold off on the PR card because you have to leave again to take care of things in old country and when you want to return to Canada, you need to apply for a PR travel document to enter. From the time you activate your PR status, you are allowed to be outside Canada for up to 1095 days over a 5 year period before lose your PR status for lack of interest so if you got your PR in 2009 or 2010 and want to move in 2011, you would be fine.

Thanks very much Leon, this is really helpfull.

Just to clarify re medicals, I assume that this has to be done before the PR visa is given. At what stage of the application process normally this is to be done?

Thanks again and happy 2009 to you all

Medicals is nearing the end. For me, I think it took 2 months to get the visa after medicals but that was a long time ago. They may be a bit slower now but you should have at least 6 to 8 months from the time you get the visa until it expires.
