Hi everyone! I have my Bachelors of Education in Junior intermediate division and have been teaching in South Korea for 8 years as an EFL teacher. I am thinking of returning to Canada this year and becoming a full time teacher. I have a few friends who had a hard time finding a full time job in the teaching. Someone in the teaching field also advised me to take a course in Special Education Level 1 and level 2 so that I could have a better chance of getting hired and doing what I love the most which is teaching. However I have been researching quiet a bit on the topic of special ed in Ontario and today I just learned that there are almost no jobs for special ed teachers on on job search sites. I have looked on all major job search sites like applytoedducation and found no jobs for full time special ed in Ontario. a few that are available are for occasional teachers. Am really not going to find a job in special ed or any teaching field?
I have volunteered with special needs students before and I think they are quiet fun to teach. In fact I enjoyed teaching kids with special needs much more then teaching homeroom students. However I have no "professional" experience teaching special need students. In the past it has always been volunteer work. I was wondering is there anyone on this forum who is a special needs teacher who could help me determine if I am fit for this job. If you have sometime please dont mind to answer a few of my questions.
1) How many students will I be handling on a daily basis if I become a full time special needs teacher in a public school. how many lesson plans will I be making? Do teachers usually have the signed and checked by the principal?
2) Usually how many special needs teachers are their in a public school (junior-intermediate division) will I be team teaching with them?
3) I am patient, active, and enjoy fast paced schedules, very creative, but I am not physically strong. I am 5ft 1 in and thin. will it be a problem for me since special ed teachers sometimes may need to physically control the students.
