Hi everyone! I have my Bachelors of Education in Junior intermediate division and have been teaching in South Korea for 8 years as an EFL teacher. I am thinking of returning to Canada this year and becoming a full time teacher. I have a few friends who had a hard time finding a full time job in the teaching. Someone in the teaching field also advised me to take a course in Special Education Level 1 and level 2 so that I could have a better chance of getting hired and doing what I love the most which is teaching. However I have been researching quiet a bit on the topic of special ed in Ontario and today I just learned that there are almost no jobs for special ed teachers on on job search sites. I have looked on all major job search sites like applytoedducation and found no jobs for full time special ed in Ontario. a few that are available are for occasional teachers. Am really not going to find a job in special ed or any teaching field?
I have volunteered with special needs students before and I think they are quiet fun to teach. In fact I enjoyed teaching kids with special needs much more then teaching homeroom students. However I have no "professional" experience teaching special need students. In the past it has always been volunteer work. I was wondering is there anyone on this forum who is a special needs teacher who could help me determine if I am fit for this job. If you have sometime please dont mind to answer a few of my questions.
1) How many students will I be handling on a daily basis if I become a full time special needs teacher in a public school. how many lesson plans will I be making? Do teachers usually have the signed and checked by the principal?
2) Usually how many special needs teachers are their in a public school (junior-intermediate division) will I be team teaching with them?
3) I am patient, active, and enjoy fast paced schedules, very creative, but I am not physically strong. I am 5ft 1 in and thin. will it be a problem for me since special ed teachers sometimes may need to physically control the students.

Hello,

I'd say you will need a list of all the special educational schools and start calling or emailing them basically selling yourself to them. This will obviously be private schools but you will have to approach them even offer voluntary so you get a idea of what you will be doing or getting into.

And don't every tell them you have no special education experience as you already mentioned that you have volunteered so that can also be considered as experience an u said before you work with a special needs pupil before use all this to your benefits don't ever go in there telling them you have no experience it be a bonus if you went in there and told them that you have experience as teachers who have 0 experience even teach in special education aswell.

1) You will have around 8 pupils and no marking will be required as most pupils work can pretty much be marked there and then as there work won't be at a high level

2)You can have joint teaching sessions, for example you have a music teacher in your school and they have a music lesson going on you can bring your pupils along to join visa versa

3) You could be 2"2 and still be able to do the job as its not your job to lift or carry them. They have people there for that.

And No1 advice be confident and positive with yourself I can see that your panicking and worrying you will be fine if you stay positive and confident in yourself.
