Dear members of the forum,
I would be happy to get informative reply to my query. I have received a position for post-doctoral work in Quebec, Canada (temporary work permit). I am non Canadian. Could you please, advise me the procedure for inviting my wife to Canada to live together with me throughout my work permit period? Just wonder if someone of you had similar case.
Thanks a lot in advance and best wishes.

Sure, since you have a post doc which didn't require an LMO, your wife is eligible for a Spousal open work permit.

You could even have applied for her along with your own wp application.

Just apply for it submitting your work permit along PLUS a letter from your employer detailing your job duties so CIC does not have a doubt about your NOC code and consider you eligible for SOWP.

Only people with jobs in NOC 0, A or B are eligible. Post docs surely fall into that category and i myself have similar situation plus got friends with exactly same background.

Thanks for the information. As I have understood my case is not that one when person in Canada sponsors a wife to come to Canada!? Because the sponsor has to be a permanent resident or Canadian citizen.

You are welcome. No it's not. Sponsor is when you are inviting some one on the basis of being a PR or a citizen. Sponsorship is permanent and takes much longer to process.

Spousal open work permit is a temporary permission to work for any employer and basically has the same validity as your primary WP. It is specifically designed to cater cases of highly skilled professionals to bring their spouse and kids.

Update:
If you do not want a work permit, you could have just gotten a temp resident visa as well (in case she needs visa to enter Canada). Same goes for dependent children. You can apply for trvs or open study permits for them, depending upon ages.

This is the only way eligible temp workers bring in their families along. Otherwise, i doubt we all be willing to work here except for very short stints.
