Hi everyone,

I was having this conversation with a friend of mine and we both have different understanding of whether or not the new "4-years to be eligible to citizenship" clause will apply to people who are already PR holders and reside in Canada or to new comers?

What is your understanding of this part of the new law, will the 4-years condition to be eligible for citizenship application be applied to everyone applying after the law is effective? or will those, like myself, who obtained the PR about a year ago and is residing in Canada be eligible after 3 years as before?

Thanks,

It will apply to everybody who has to apply to be a citizen, so that includes you.

It doesn't matter when you became a PR - what matters is when you apply for citizenship. If you apply for citizenship after the new rules come into play then the new rules will apply to you.

Thanks everyone,

That's my understanding too...I was hoping I was wrong LOL...but on the good side, this new law is supposed to speed-up the process, so silver lining.

Best
