Temporary visa in Quebec, but federal permanent residency

Hi all,

I'm currently in Montreal with a temporary visa. This visa is active until October 09
I just got my permanent residency which I need to activate before August 09, so before my temporary visa and my work contract expire.
Problem, I have a federal application, so I need to land outside of Quebec and provide an address outside of Quebec as well

Do I have to quit my job ? which I'd like to avoid. If I tell the immigration agent that I'm working in Quebec, which I can prove since I have my work contract and the temporary visa, and tell him that I'll finish the contract first and then move to Ontario, he is going to freak out ?

Thanks for your help

Well, i'm all for moving to Ontario which has always been the plan (I ended up in Montreal kind of by accident). My point is that now I have a contract and a visa in Quebec until October and the Canadian administration is kind of "forcing" me to break these 2 and move to Ontario before August. I like what I do here and I'd like to finish the projects I'm working on and I kind of feel bad telling my employer: "You know what, the contract I signed with you a year ago, well, screw it, I have to move to Ontario. And the projects I'm working on, I won't finish them so you better find somebody else to replace me real quick".

My problem is a timing problem, not a destination problem. It's just that it seems stupid to me to have to leave a Canadian company 3 months before the end of a contract that's all.

Thanks again for your help

Bit of a dilemma. Can you land in Ontario and tell them that you will give them an address later? Then when you move to Ontario, you can call them and give them an address to send your PR card?

can you "land" in ontario, give an address in Ontario (perhaps a friend's address) and then move to Quebec the next day to continue with your job?

Well, yes I suppose. If it's OK to stay with the same company while I'm changing status (between temporary and permanent), then yes, I can take a few days off, land in Toronto and provide the address later

But I want to be clear on the fact that i won't misguide anybody. If the immigration agent ask me what i do for a living, my answer will be that I'm currently working for a company in Montreal and will continue to do so for the next few months. And that's the part worrying me a little.

cant you ask your manager, if you can "quit" for few days lol.

i don't know how these things work, so best to wait for someone else to reply.

will they ask you whether you are working for someone given that you are only moving in now.

Tell them that you are bound by a contract in Quebec but you will move to ON as soon as it ends. That is if they ask. I can't imagine they would be that picky but no guarantees. You can also call CIC and ask if they think this will be a problem.

first of all what does this means "activate before August 09" can you clarify

how they confirm this, if its matter of verification by mail an ON adress then I agree with rupesh, you can give friends address or rent a home at ON and give that address with back to work, or does activation require you to have work address as ON, just can you clarify what is activation

When you apply for PR and get it. You first get a PR visa in your passport. You have to "land" in Canada to activate your PR status. They give you a limit on the visa for when you have to do this by. If you let it expire, it's worthless and you would have to apply again. You become a PR when you "land".

so if I dont get job before landing in canada is it possible I land before visa expire, I apply (activate) for PR during immigration, SIN & CCTB give friends address and go back to home country after a week (due to cost of living concern & dont want to do transit jobs like sandwich makers), ask my friend to courier receivable to my home country so i can renter canada as visa is one entry i think or if expired? is this fine to go with?

so once i confirm a decent job by sitting in home country I can re-land with PR in my hand, this may be case as I dont want sudden shock of climate incase it was winter as I'm coming from warm country & not drove in ice

Exactly. You can land, take care of the paperwork, give a friends address for the PR card, go back, friend gets PR card in the mail and mails or fed-ex's it to you and you will have it when you want to go back. That is absolutely fine. Many people do this because they need to take care of business in their homeland before they move and can't hang around in Canada for 4-6 weeks to wait for the card. It is not called re-landing to come back with a PR card. Once you have a PR card, every time you enter, you are just coming home.

However, even with PR, it may not be easy to confirm a decent job by sitting in your homeland emailing out CV's. Most people will not hire you without an interview but you can set up interviews, then go to Canada and do the interviews and hopefully you will have a job out of one of them. If you are worried about driving in snow and ice, you can take a couple of lessons by a driving instructor to get some tips.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your answers. I talked with the CIC today and here is what they told me.
Apparently I can activate my permanent visa and still stay in Montreal for the remaining of my contract. I don't have to quit my job or anything. But they were clear on the fact that I need to use a ground point of entry. I cannot do the activation in an airport. I have to do it by car, just go to the US border and reenter Canada there. The border station will deliver the permanent residency. They were also clear that I need to provide an address outside of Quebec to receive the PR card. Except that everything should be fine, I can show them my temporary visa along with the rest of the documentation, the fact that I'll stay in Quebec for a few months and relocate after that shouldn't be an issue
