Hi guys,

I have been in Canada for about 9 months now. My family joined me a month later and have been in Canada for 9 months.

We just got our COPR last week and I would like to apply for OHIP.

The problem that I am facing is that the documents required to establish residency in Ontario all have my name on it and there is nothing to prove my wife's residency. My wife and kids came one month later so everything is in my name. I do have a bank account which is a joint account and that has our address on it, does that work or does an account have to be only in her name and not a joint account? I understand that they are very particular about the residency requirements and will only accept mailed bank statements. The bank has told us that they will mail us a statement for the month of June, which we shall receive in early July.

The only other thing might be the income tax notice of assessment which we will get in June because she had filed her federal taxes (despite having 0 income because as internationals it is good practice to file one even if you are not earning). She will get a notice of assessment next week but I read somewhere on the forum that they may or may not accept a federal tax return.

So do you guys think she has acceptable residency documents? If no, what can she do to prove her residence?

Thank You

Not sure why you would think the bank account has to be in her name only. If that were true, it would be stated on the OHIP website. Also, NOA is clearly listed on the OHIP website as an acceptable document, so again, not sure why you would think otherwise.

Valid questions.

My problem is that I come from the US before moving to Canada. There I used to file separate state taxes. Here in Canada due to certain issues i couldn't get to filing taxes on time, so in the end i just did them in 1 day using turbo tax. The software never informed me of a separate ontario tax form that I need to fill out so I am wondering if the only tax that me and my wife filed are federal and not state taxes? Hence the worry about NOA being just a federal return not tying me to the province.

The bank account in her name only question arose because of something I read on one of the other replies on this topic somewhere (I can't recall right now) which seemed to suggest that there must be a document showing her as the primary owner of that document (maybe one can be primary in a joint account and I am getting all confused?)

The software does the provincial side as well. And it isn't about tying you to the province through the actual return. All OHIP wants to see is the name and address printed on a piece of paper that was mailed out.

Follow the OHIP website. It clearly lists what is acceptable and there is nothing stated about "primary owner".

I had one more question, if you might have some knowledge regarding it.

So if i have been in Ontario since late last year (became PR last week), does that in any affect my 3 month waiting period before start of coverage? Or the 3 month waiting period will begin from the date that Service Ontario receive my application regardless of how long i have been PR or have been residing in Ontario as a temporary resident?

The 3 month wait starts from the date you obtained status that qualifies, so the date you became a PR.
