Temporary Residency Renewal

Hey, I'm getting a couple different answers to how to renew my wife's temporary residency while we wait for her application. Her temporary residency expires on June 16, 2017.

What is the best way to do it? When we came into the country, we crossed at the Ambassador Bridge and we went into secondary inspection where a border guard gave us a year temporary resident permit. Would it make sense to go to the States, come back into Canada, and ask them to send us to secondary to get a renewal?

Or am I better off applying online? What are the costs associated with the renewal?

Thanks!

You should be able to apply for a New Visitor Permit or Temporary Resident Permit on the IRCC website. Online applications are processed a lot quicker than paper applications.

If you are applying for a brand new Visitor Visa online it takes 7 days approximately to process, and 19 days on paper forms. If you are applying for an extension of a Visitor Visa it takes approximately 74 days for online applications and 119 days for paper applications.

For a New Visitor Visa or an Extension of a Visitor Visa it costs $100.00. If you fell out of Visitor status and need to restore your status as a Visitor it costs $200.00.

Just wanted to share my experience - you are able to renew temporary residency at the border. We're fortunate to live in a border city (Windsor) and we crossed into the States this morning, went to church, came back and when we got to the booth he asked the normal questions and then handed back the passports. I then said that we needed to extend my wife's temporary residency and asked him to send us into secondary. We waited an hour and got it all done without having to pay. They gave her another year. The only thing we needed was our passports (with her temporary residency stapled inside).
