You also need a huge amount of luck. Canada has many, many, unemployed teachers...

Why is this so? is there a large student to teacher ratio in Canada? Don't older teachers retire and necessiate a need to hire new ones? Are there too few schools in Canada? Why are there so many unemployed teachers in Canada?
Just curious.

There are many reasons, here are some:
1. Better healthcare leads to people living longer and prolonging their retirement
2. The economy is not the best so people hold onto their jobs with dear life
3. Most teachers jobs are not permanant, again due to poor economy. So schools nowadays hire teachers for temporary parr time positions. This way there is no long term commitment from the employer. Think of it as a f#!*k buddy, benefits of all pleasures with no long term commitment.
4. You need Canadian experience to teach, so you are out of luck if you graduate from teachers college with no teaching experience.

Teaching used to be a relatively easy profession to qualify in. Therefore, a lot of teachers were created. My wife is an example. She ended up having to work part-time in a bank as there were no available teaching positions.

I'm in Toronto, ON. I have a work history in education from the States and I landed on august 19th. I got a part-time job by sept. 19th teaching a course at a private school. And I have had a couple of new offers since. In my limited experience, it seems easier to find a job in the private schools. But I must admit that teaching in Canada is a little different from the states.
