Hello iamlost,

On your tax return, you will still indicate your marital status as 'married' and report the date when you became married. For example, if you were married in 2013, then you have to report the date on the 2013 personal tax return. You will also indicate that your spouse is a non-resident of Canada. No, the CRA will not 'deduct' money from you for this reason.

You should be aware that programs which issue credits like the GST/HST or Trillium benefit will want to know the income your husband earned prior to becoming a resident of Canada.

I hope that makes sense.
