Hi all,
To give a little background. I'm a UK citizen who obtained PR through my Canadian wife and landed in Canada in April.
I work for a large global business and when I moved to Canada I continued to work for the UK arm remotely (never visiting the Canadian offices or doing work with anyone in Canada, in fact the biz area I'm in doesn't operate in the Canadian arm) and I continued to get paid in the UK and pay taxes there. In Aug I was transferred to the Canadian business for payroll and tax purposes but continue to work in my old job.
Canadian HR started looking into my taxes, and they're now requesting a full payment of the income taxes from April to Aug be paid to them. This makes no sense to me. 1. why would I pay them my taxes?, 2. I was paying taxes in the UK and there is a treaty to avoid double taxation, i was employed in the UK. I was planning on completing my tax returns and showing the money I earned in the UK and the money I earned in Canada. I fully expected that I may need to pay the difference.
Just wanted to get some thoughts on this, from anyone who may have experience.
Thanks
