Do you have a particular form in mind? The sponsor checklist (IMM 5491) says "for the most recent taxation year."sakay said:

In our application in April 2013 we sent the Option C printout for 2011 and a letter of employment because the Option C for 2012 was not available yet. He got approved as a sponsor a month later.
