Switching from Student Permit to Temporary Full-Time Work Permit Visa

Hello,

I reached Canada about 2 months back on a student permit. After attending school for 1 and a half months, I have de-registered from my graduate program after an employer offered to hire me full-time. I had 4 years of full-time experience working in the same Industry (Software) before coming here to Canada (primarily the reason why i was offered the job). The employer has applied for LMO and we are awaiting their decision. What I would like to know is that, if and when i apply for my work-permit (which will be very soon assuming LMO goes my way), what chances do I have of securing my temporary work permit visa? Since I have opted out of the program, i am little worried.

Please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

It depends on who reviews your application.

you could get someone who let you go through or someone who thinks you only applied to be a student to get into Canada initially so you could look for work (which could have a very negative outcome). Personally, I'd brace myself for the latter and get ready to do some explaining.

There has been a lot of negative publicity about foreign students getting a student visa, then using this to work and not attend school.

Some people call it 'buying a work visa' and CIC are clamping down hard on this.

I believe you would need to write a very constructive, detailed essay on why you have stopped studying and taken this job. Why the employer needs you etc etc. If you can prove to CIC that although your initial intention was to study but by chance this opportunity arose and it will be conductive to you, your employer's business and Canada, then I see no reason why you should be refused.

Good Luck.

Hello,

Got a 1 year LMO. I filed an online application for my work-permit last Monday (Nov 8th). My passport is still with me. Are you guys aware how long does it usually take for a new work-permit application to get processed at this time of the year? Is there anything that I could do to expedite the process?

Thanks.

Processing times are listed as 24-50 days on the CIC site:

A couple of quick questions:

1) The LMO that I have received is just for 1 year. Does this mean that my work-permit will also be issued for only 1 year?
2) In case my work-permit application were to fail, can I re-apply right away or is there a waiting period?

Thanks
