Switching companies - /LMO/WP . How does it work.

Hi everybody,

I know this might have been discussed several times, but I couldn't find any thread on this. So here is my case.
I am in IT industry and I have been working for employer A in ON on workpermit for the last two years. It is going to be expired by 25th July 2012. Currently extension process is on. My LMO will be applied in next few days. I am also planing to apply for PR under CEC category as I will be completing two years here in Canada.

Now, Employer B is offering me a job. Based on what I read so far in this forum, Employer B also has to go through LMO/new WP process. is that correct? If LMO/WP with Employer B is complete and do I have to re-enter Canada with new WP? or can I just switch the companies and activate the new WP?
And how long does it take to get a new LMO/WP in ON.? 14/15 weeks? Are there any other options which employer B can try to speed up the process?


I posted the same question in Ontario LMO tracker thread and just thought , I may get more responses if it is a new thread.

Yes - you need a new LMO and a new closed work permit if you want to work for the new employer (LMOs and closed work permits are not transferable).

The processing times you've suggested sound about right and unfortunatley there's nothing your employer can do to speed up the process.

Hopefully someone else can help with the remainder of your questions.

Once you get the new LMO, you will have to apply for a new work permit. If you are visa exempt to Canada or in some cases if you have a multiple entry visa, you can do this by going to the border, flagpoling to the US and coming back to Canada to apply for your permit. You will pay $150 and get your new permit instantly. Your new permit will invalidate your old permit so after you do this, you can no longer work for the old employer, only the new one.

If you can not or don't want to go to the border, you can get your new work permit in 11 days if you apply online, see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/temp.asp

So the real game is LMO which consumes all the time.
