Hi all, my mom's had a visitor visa for a while now. She is currently in Canada with me but her passport will expire in August 2020 which means her visitor visa will expire the same time. She already extended her stay once in Canada so 6 months after her extension approval she has to leave Canada according to the rules, and that date is in June 2020. She's thinking about renewing a new passport in Calgary at the Chinese consulate. Once she receives her new passport, does her old visitor visa expire? If so then she has no valid temporary status in Canada meaning she has to leave? Given the current situation with the Coronavirus, it's hard to get a air ticket back to China, meaning she might be staying in Canada illegally? Can she apply for a new visitor visa inside of Canada? She doesn't wanna take flights now because it's very easy to get infected on a plane, especially when the plane doesn't fly direct but rather takes stops in multiple places around the world. At this difficult time, we try not to travel but her status in Canada will expire soon and I don't think she can extend her stay again.

Her old visa will continue to be valid. She should go ahead and apply for a new passport.

Just to add, the visa validity doesn’t affect your mother’s status. Do try to apply for the extension anyway; maybe you can catch a break because of the covid-19 situation, ideally you can show you can still support your mother’s stay financially.

The validity of the TRV has nothing to do with her status in Canada. If she renews her passport, her visitor status remains valid until June, just like before. She can certainly apply for another extension prior to her current status expiring.
