Hi there,

My mom landed in Canada in May 2013 with Super Visa then came back in September - I bought one year insurance for her.

If She will visit Canada again next year in September, does she still need to have another one year insurance?

Thank you.

Contact the insurance company to get a partial refund for the unused coverage. You will need to provide proof of her leaving Canada and arriving back home, this can a stamp in the passport or airfare.
Then you can two options:
1. you can simply get a refund to whatever method you used to pay for the insurance like your credit card.
2. ask the insurance company to buy a new policy for her next visit, in this case you will need to add additional funds to make up 365 days (1 years worth of coverage)

With a Super Visa it is confusing most companies will allow you to travel within the one year policy period between Canada and your Moms home county. However in your case she won't be coming back until next year so yes you will need a new policy for her next visit.

I am an insurance broker and see this all the time, the truth is a super visa was never meant for short term visits of two month you could of simply applied for a regular visitors visa. The benefit with a Super Visa is you don't need to apply for a visa for each visit, however I have seen people get a multiple entry visa that is not a super visa. As far as insurance you would want to buy it regardless of what type of visa you applied for. The way it works is the Canadian Host is personally liable for their visitors medical expenses so it is money well spent assuming you buy the right coverage for your Moms medical requirements.

Don't be shy just ask for a partial refund, most companies will give it to you. The only exception I know of is GMS Insurance Super Visa policies they don't offer any partial refunds, there may be others, I only deal with eight insurance companies for super visa at this time.
