There aren’t any updates if you are waiting for a hearing. You are just waiting on a list like tens of thousands of other asylum claimants. As long as your processing time is not abnormal then you are just waiting like everyone else. It is not unusual to have to wait up to 2+ years for a hearing. Is this a private lawyer or legal aid? If private they can bill for every interaction so they will follow-up even if there is no new information or there is no reason to contact IRB because they can bill for the interaction. They will bill you for finding out that you are still waiting for a hearing.

If you have spent all the money from their retainer you can still be billed for every interaction unless there is a fixed fee. Unfortunately if you pay a fixed fee there isn’t the same response to every inquiry because lawyers can’t bill you. In this case there is no information to be obtained. You are on a very long waiting list and are waiting until you get a hearing date. IRB will just tell you that you are on a list waiting for a hearing to be assigned to you if you do try and contact them. IRB does seem to be trying to implement some new policies to try to get through the backlog because there have been so many asylum claims last year.
That’s the reason why I don’t like to take any lawyer. I have done everything by myself from the beginning until I received a date and all in just 5 month in Canada. Sometimes all you need is to read a lot you will find instructions on everything rather than trying to pay a lot of money to those lawyer who have no magic stick to speed up the process.
I know it’s not related but I just didn’t want to get one. Tell me Is early date related to luck? What could be the reason behind an early date ? and why other people in the same city have to wait very long to get a date .
You could have both a case that is clearly going to be approved or denied for a few select reasons. You may have just gotten lucky for a variety of reasons. You could have been at the right place at the right time to get a cancellation. There are a number of pilot programs trying to address processing delays. Sometimes they start with new applications versus going back to start processing the older applications first especially if there is a new way applications are being processed. Has nothing to do with having a lawyer. There are other cases that have received a decision quickly who had lawyers.
Before submitting my basis of claim with the related evidences I had time to read IRB reports for the national documentations packages related to my claim and the real situation in my country. And all the irb reports and some NGO reports tend to demonstrate clearly that there is a good ground of persecution for a situation like mine. Anyway I am confident and believe it will be successful.
This has nothing to do with getting such a fast hearing date. You could have easily gotten a hearing date in a year from now. Has nothing to do with your case or whether you have a lawyer or not. How fast you get a hearing date comes down to a lot of luck.
