I took a 2 yr program in canada and applied for my visa but i only got visa length of 1 yr. Is it common that this happen. Will i get study permit till my course length or till my visa length. Can i extend my visa after reaching canada.

If it is written in your offer letter that you can complete the program in 1 year then you'll receive visa validity of only 1 year.
