Study permit/visa for an MSC program which is online.

Dear All,

I am applying for a Masters program in Memorial University located in Newfoundland but my program is delivered completely online. It's not online program that I seek but my chosen course in the chosen university turned out to be one. My question is will I be able to get a study permit/visa even though my program is offered online? I mean I want to be in Canada despite the fact that my course is taught online.

CIC won't issue a study permit if the course is online since you don't have to be in Canada to complete it. Note that you also won't qualify for a post graduate work permit.

Hey thanks for your reply. However I contacted the university and gave me a slightly different reply although they werent sure whether I would be granted a visa. Here is the email:

Hi Luke,

Hope you are well. Thank you for getting back to me. I do not have two years of work experience as I graduated recently, (have only one year) yet I am very much interested in this program. Would you still be able to consider me?
Also since the program is offered online I am not sure if I will be granted a study permit to come to Canada as ist falls under 'distance learning'. It's not distance learning that I seek, I chose MTM and it turned out to be one. Would you be able to let me know whether it is possible to get a study permit even though the program is offered online. I am actually considering to study and later work in Canada and without a valid study permit I will not be able to reside there.

You could still be considered despite the fact that you only have one year of experience. Is your work experience relevant to technology and/or management?

There is nothing on the acceptance letter or the degree for that matter that says ‘distance learning’. Ultimately, the decision to accept or reject a study permit/visa request is up to the immigration officer who processes your application. It would be up to the visa officer to examine your case. We do currently have international students who have come to Canada and are pursuing some of our online programs.

Just curious

Why go all the way to canada for an online program you can do at the convenience of your home. You would save alot if u stay back and rather apply for a visitor visa to canada. you can always visit if need be.
