Study permit validity after withdrawing from a university and getting a letter of acceptance from another university

Hello,

I am currently enrolled in a program at a university in Ontario. I recently received a conditional letter of acceptance from another university in Ontario, which will start on May 1, 2025.

I understand that when I change programs, I need to inform IRCC of my new Designated Learning Institution (DLI). However, if I withdraw from my current university and only have the letter of acceptance from the new university, will my study permit remain valid?

Thank you for your time and advice!

So you are currently studying at the school on your permit and will do so for at east a semester. You cannot withdraw until you have completed a semester. If you do then you need a new study permit. Plus program doesn’t start until May so that is more than 6 months so need a new permit.

Hi Naturgrl,

Thank you for your reply! If I withdraw in December, would that be fine since it will be within the 6-month deadline?

The condition is to send official transcripts and proof of degrees as my previous university was in a foreign country.
So once you have completed first semester, upload offer letter and change DLI. Should be okay. What school and program are you changing to?

Awesome, thank you for the info. I am changing to a MSc in Mechanical Engineering at Lakehead University.
