I wasn't in school for a year because of the recession happening in my home country but I am currently enrolled and need to extend my study permit. I know I messed up by not attending school. Have I lost my student status? Also if I have, am I going to school unauthorized and what are my chances of getting a study permit renewed?

How long were you out of school? Was it really for a full year or just a few months? Did you work at all during this time?

I missed three (4 months) semesters so a full year. I also worked for 4 months but stopped after finding out I wasn't allowed to work when I was not in school.

It's a difficult situation and very hard to know how to advise you. Your study permit should have been canceled a while ago since you stopped attending school which would put you in Canada without status. If your study permit was in fact canceled, at this point it would be too late to restore your status within Canada - and the only option would be to leave Canada.

There's some chance your study permit wasn't canceled. I guess you can try applying for an extension and see what happens.

If it turns out that you did lose your status a while back then you will need to leave Canada and apply for a new study permit from outside of Canada. It may be quite difficult to get a new study permit because you would have worked and studied without authorization.
