Study Permit for Dependant Child

My wife and I may receive 3 year work permits. If we do, I would like to bring her 13yr old son here to go to school. It seems pretty straight forward.

My question is his school year ends in March, I would like him to come here then so that he has some time to acclimate before starting school in September.
Would we just get him a visitors visa for that time and then a study permit a few months after?

Does anyone have experience with bringing your children to Canada for schooling?

Thanks, as always

Yeah, i don't really think you should do it twice.

CIC guidelines simply say for 6+ and under 18 dependent children, apply for "open study permit". It is the same procedure as you do for a normal study permit as indicated on CIC's website with the exception that you simply write "Not applicable" for the institution name etc. It is "open" so is not dependent on acceptance from a school/college. Plus you would have to attach proof of your relationship and your work permit (assuming you apply for him after your own approval)

You could have applied for his open study permit along with your own work permit applications. Then those are processed as a single package and visas are issued together. I did that for my kids (7 year old - open study permit, under 5, trvs).

Hope that helps.

We are in a catch 22.....both my wife and are on implied status.....and she is from a country that needs a TRV. Easier for me to Rio down to the border this week and get my WP(i will be paying twice but dont care) and then send my WP in to support her open work permit that has already been submitted
My stepson school year ends in March, we could probably bring him over after his Ocotber break but i think best to let him finish out the year....He has 5 months here and in a dedicated English school before he has to start regular school
