study permit and TRV expiring while I am away from Canada

Hi,
I have applied for an extension of the study permit since I am currently studying. My TRV and study permit will expire on the 31st of Dec 2019. I am going to be in India since I have some important work. What happens if I don't get to hear from the CIC? Currently, it is taking a longer time than usual to process the study permit extension. How can I return to Canada if my TRV and study permit get expired?
Can I apply for a visitor visa from India to enter Canada? Please help. Thanks!

You will have to wait until sp is issued then apply for TRV you can't come back otherwise. Not sure if you can get a visitor while waiting for sp extension, but no guarantee that would be faster anyway.

Thanks for your response. I spoke to one of the customer care representatives from CIC and asked me to apply for visitor visa since that's easier. Also, he asked me to write a detailed explanation letter. Not sure hows this is going to work. It's taking a lot of time!
