Hello,
What happened with us is the following in detail then I will try to explain:
December,8 2011: we got married.
December 22 2011: We sent the application to CIC.
February 15 2012: CIC sent an e-mail to my wife claiming approval. Sponsorship is approved and the file is sent to Paris. This e-mail was sent to the sponsor, who is my wife.
April,11 2012: I received an email, me the sponsored person from embassy of Canada in Paris saying the following: This confirms that your application for permanent residence in Canada has been received by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) on 2011/12/28.
To sum up, I say that until now, we received 2 e-mails one to my sponsor(wife) and the second to me ( sponsored husband).
What I know for sure that they will contact us ,which applies to you and your husband too , either to add further documents or for an interview. from now on I believe that it will take no longer than 4 months at the most. Concerning the point about sending the passport soon, I don't really think so, because there should be obviously an interview and they might ask once again for police certificate or identity documents, or even another medical test. they do ask for further documents usually because their validity date expire while processing takes place , for instance the police cert. should not bypass 3 months the day the visa should be issued. But mailing the passport should be the last step . concerning the processing time they say on the site the second step, which we both are in, take 8 months. lets say 6 to 8 months it depends from one person to the other, if supposedly they started processing my application the day it was received 2011-12-28, by June or July I think they will ask for my passport, if on the other hand they started processing it starting from February 15 2012 then add 2 more months.
Eventually I say again that it differs from one person to the other. the second step in Paris can take from, even 4 to 8 months at the most and as I said previously its about how accurate and complete the documents and proofs are. Hope I gave some help. And if any one has been through this step he or she might enlighten both of us.
Good Luck
