Status Restore while PR under process

This is on the behalf of my friend .
He was working as a truck driver in 2015 He got his AINP approved last
year in September 2015. He applied for PR under nominee program and
got his file no in December 2015. Meanwhile his Work permit expired on
1st Dec 2015.
Now he has no status. He did not work anywhere due to some medical
conditions but he has no proof of illness . kind of stress he had.

What he can do now. is there any chance he can stay. ?
His status is In Process when we check application status.
I can provide you the details if you can please let me know honestly.
Is there any way we can proceed.

or it is better to go back to India without wasting time.

according to my knowledge you can work and live in Canada if you applied application before expiry of ur original status. He is under implied condition until decision is not made. But confrm with some consultant for help.
