I am an Indian citizen who completed PhD from a US university and since then working full time for the last 2.5 years as a research staff at a University. My wives profile is the same except that she has been working as Assistant Professor for only one year now. We are planning to apply for Canadian PR. Although some of the question have been answered in few other posts, I would like others opinion based on our profiles.

1. I realize we can apply for Skilled Worker category. We will be looking for jobs once we get our PR or somewhere around that time. But can switch from working to not working, if needed?

2. Can we start a company in Canada once we get our PR? Does PR allow switching from full time job to part time (in a different company or university) or even taking quitting the job to care of company full time if needed?

3. Is it more easier to get PR under her profile or my profile as the primary person?

Thanks for your replies.

If you don't have any other work experience other than research staff, I am not sure you fit the list of 38 criteria. But your wife does.

Only one of you need to apply for both so you will get it at the same time.

1) yes you can.
2) yes you can.
3) I'd say her profile, if she has 67 points.

Thanks for the information Rupesh.

I was also looking for information about another question.

We were planning to apply for PR in the next few months and may be during next summer (Summer 2010), find a job for both and move to Canada under a work visa. Since we will be applying for PR as people outside Canada,

1. Since we will be moving in to Canada during the processing, will that be allowed?
2. Do we need to start the process again if we move in to Canada before PR gets processed or approved? This will mean that we will be waiting even further (2 years) before we can apply again.

We would move to Canada in Summer because the transition will be smoother for both of us.

I bet if you apply within the next month, you'd probably get your PR before next summer or sometime during next summer.
You don't have to apply again just because you are in Canada, even if your PR application hadn't finished processing.
If you go to Canada before you get your PR, you might have to go back to your country for PR visa stamping or for interview if they call you for one. But since you are near the US, this might not be a problem as long as you have visa to re-enter US.

I presume you can apply for Work Permit while your PR is in process so that you can go to Canada but I am not 100% sure about this. Someone else would have to answer. Good luck.
