If the sponsor has been on social services (not sure how recent) or has an undischarged bankruptcy that would be grounds for denial at 1st stage.

Yes everything about the sponsor is checked in stage one. Stage two is where the relationship is scrutinized.
You are worrying about too much...it is a process and a very long one at times. You both do your very best on the forms and be very honest in your answers.
